Melva K. Coyne

October 24, 2014

January 14, 1928 -- October 24, 2014

Melva K. Coyne, age 86, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Woodland Hospice House near Mt. Pleasant.  Mel was born on January 14, 1928, in Merrill, Michigan, the daughter of Carl John and Matilda Augusta (Maas) Krogman.  She married Daniel G. Coyne on November 18, 1950 in Iva, Michigan.  To this marriage three children were born, David D. (Linda) Coyne of Mt. Pleasant, Dana L. Coyne of Gross Pointe Park, Michigan and Mark K. Coyne of Mt. Pleasant.

Mel, as she was known, was the secretary treasurer of Coyne Oil Corporation.  The company was started in 1930 by Lorne Coyne.  When Dan and Mel took over the company, they started out on the Coyne family dining room table, where Mel worked on the books until with time the dining room became the office.  Mel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Zion Lutheran Women’s Guild, the Child Study Club, Delta Zeta Sorority, the CMCH Auxiliary and was the first woman on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Petroleum Association.  She also enjoyed traveling and was an honorary member of the Mt. Pleasant Tourist Club, bicycling and riding her BMW motorcycle.  Mel graciously put up with her good friend, Alice Helms, for close to one hundred and five years.

Surviving Mel besides her three children are her three grandchildren:  Daniel, Michael and Kelsey Coyne-Quakenbush and a brother-in law-Cap Spiess. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan on August 5, 2002, both parents, and two sisters: Betty Heilman and her husband Carl and sister Ruth Spiess.

Services celebrating Mel’s life will be held on Monday, October 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, 3401 E. River Road with Pastor’s Samuel Reith and Johnathon Bakker officiating.  Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery later in the day.  Friends may gather with the family on Sunday from 4 – 7 p.m. at the church.  Memorial contributions in Mel’s memory may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Woodland Hospice.  Envelopes are available at the church and Rowley Funeral Home.
